About LeAP: Leadership for Africa's Parks
LeAP teaches new skills to African government protected area personnel to more effectively protect their countries' iconic parks and wildlife into the future. Unfortunately, graduates of African wildlife colleges and universities often are not trained in the conservation leadership and professional skills they need to effectively protect government parks and wildlife, such as managing protected area staff and engaging with local stakeholders. Experts agree these skills are essential for improving park performance and protecting wildlife. LeAP works to fill in these key gaps in training, partnering with faculty at African wildlife colleges and universities to empower all graduates with the leadership skills they need to improve park performance and wildlife protection. Working closely with the Directors of RP Kitabi College in Rwanda and Garoua Wildlife College/ / L’Ecole de Faune de Garoua in Cameroon and key faculty from Njala University in Sierra Leone and University of Kisangani in Democratic Republic of Congo, LeAP mentors chosen faculty to develop new courses on leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict management. Over time, these courses will become embedded into university curricula, training hundreds of rangers and managers annually at the diploma and undergraduate level for government protected areas and parks. LeAP will continue to expand the network by facilitating exchanges and joint training with faculty from other African universities, ultimately creating a Pan-African network of leadership training programs across the continent. Our goal is to develop capacity in Africa, for African government institutions to better protect their parks and wildlife for all.
