About Leaping Literacy

Students often struggle with a loss of academic skills over the summer, especially in reading. The Leaping Literacy Summer Program is a whole language, learning camp that turns the “summer slide” into a “summer climb” for community children in an exciting, project-based environment. It also supports family-based events designed to teach parents how to incorporate literacy into their family’s everyday life. A literacy specialist and a children’s librarian oversee the day-to-day curriculum with visiting visual artists, musicians, dancers, storytellers and science teachers who connect to a single theme anchored in trade books read throughout the day. During camp, children practice written and spoken expression across content areas in writing forms outlined in the state standards.
