About Legacy Aviation Learning Center
FAA Certified: Air Agency Certificate #LALT669K Legacy Aviation Learning Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aspires to be Northern Michigan’s premier aviation maintenance education facility working to grow a community of aviation enthusiasts through accessible opportunities that attract and educate the next generation of aviation professionals. Home to the Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) Chapter 234, and Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and operating an Aircraft Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) funded through local educational and governmental partnerships, and independent funding. The need for aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians is projected to grow by 11% in the next decade, a rate that is 3% greater than all occupations in the United States (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Paradoxically, there are no Aircraft Maintenance Technician Schools in the lower or upper peninsulas of Michigan north of Grand Rapids and only three in the southern half. Recent changes to FAA regulations have made several options available in the way Airframe and Powerplant (A/P) mechanics are certified by the FAA. With a goal of 50 students annually, graduates will be able to enter a lucrative, highly technical career that will see them earning between $80,000 to $125,000. The Founders' foresight and in-depth understanding of the impact of this projected shortage of aircraft mechanics and technicians in the industry compelled them to aspire to create a world-class aircraft maintenance technician school, Legacy Aviation Learning Center. Legacy Aviation Learning Center became possible when three pilots and general aviation enthusiasts invested $1.5 million in a once-in-a-lifetime property bordering Cherry Capital Airport in the Spring of 2022. Their passion for reviving general aviation and desire to provide opportunities to aspiring youth drove them to purchase the Delta-Two Hangar and attached 4,600 sq. ft. office building.
