About Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG)
Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) represents legal aid practitioners across England and Wales. Our members deliver vital legal services to vulnerable clients, helping to tackle the issues which continue to blight our society, such as domestic abuse, discrimination, homelessness, and poverty. Our membership comprises a wider range of professionals who deliver legal aid across all categories of law, including solicitors, barristers, legal executives, and costs lawyers. We believe that access to justice is a fundamental right, and we campaign tirelessly for a fair, comprehensive, and accessible legal aid scheme. The system has been chronically underfunded for decades, which has had a direct impact on the wider justice system and the ability of ordinary people to access the legal support they need. We are fighting to change and improve a system which is a foundational pillar of a fair and equal society. We provide expert support and training for those working on the frontlines of social justice law. As a respected voice in the sector, and one of only three official government consultee bodies, we engage directly with key government departments and, via the APPG on Access to Justice, with parliamentarians. We advocate for a viable supply of practitioners and a system that ensures that equal access to justice is not determined by how much you earn or own. We are also proud to deliver two of the most significant events in the legal aid calendar: •Our Annual Conferences bring together hundreds of practitioners, experts, students, and other stakeholders for professional development and discussion on key policy themes. The conference builds a sense of community across the legal aid profession. •We are the home of the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards (LALYs) – the only awards dedicated solely to the legal aid community. The LALYs celebrate the tireless work, extraordinary commitment, and incredible impact of legal aid providers across the country.
