About Linden Place Museum
Welcome to Linden Place, the "crown jewel" of Bristol, Rhode Island's historic waterfront district. We invite you to come and explore this magnificent estate, Bristol's 'Great House', where generations of seafaring DeWolfs, Colts, and Barrymores entertained presidents and politicos. It is the mission of the Friends of Linden Place to restore and preserve its treasured historic property and to insure its public accessibility by developing a program of uses that will enhance the artistic, cultural and educational life of the community. Linden Place mansion built in 1810 by the seafaring General George DeWolf, is open for visitors from May 2nd until October 11th, during the month of December, or by appointment. Guided & self-guided tours of the estate, featured in the film The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, are be given May through Columbus Day, Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tours by appointment are available November through April by calling 401-253-0390. Tour highlights include tales of DeWolf family exploits, from their privateering and slave trading to their financial ruin and triumphant return to prosperity during Victorian times. Docents introduce visitors to family members Pomeroy Colt, founder of United States Rubber, now Uniroyal, his mother Theodora DeWolf Colt, who as Madam Colt ran Bristol Society from Linden Place as if she was Queen Victoria and the great actress Ethel Barrymore who married in to this most prominent of American families. At the tour's end, visitors are welcome to stroll the sculpture-filled gardens where they will find Greek bronzes and an 18th Century gazebo.
