About Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts
WHO WE ARE Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is Massachusetts’ leading provider of free literacy and ESOL tutoring for adults, serving more than 1,000 individuals each year through a network of 12 programs across the state. LVM’s award-winning program focuses on adults with low level skills, and has been a proven solution since 1972. With improved literacy skills and the confidence that comes with them, adults are able to become more self-sufficient, and pursue a better life and a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. OUR MISSION LVM provides free, confidential, flexibly scheduled and individualized tutoring that focuses on the goals, skills, and everyday materials that are important to the student, helping to ensure success and keep motivation strong. Confidential and flexibly scheduled tutoring helps students overcome embarrassment, scheduling, or transportation problems which are often obstacles to learning. High quality training and ongoing support from LVM’s professional staff ensure that tutor/student pairs are successful and have a positive experience. Prospective volunteers attend a 2-hour information session and then an 18-hour training in either basic literacy or ESOL before being matched to work with an adult for 2 hours per week for at least 9 to 12 months.
