About Long-Duration Energy Storage

The California Energy Commission has funded a study of what roles energy storage will play in a zero-carbon grid of the future. This project team includes UC Merced, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and U of North Carolina Chapel Hill with participation from U Texas Austin. While it's possible to envision that solar panels coupled with batteries could provide electricity for California without emitting carbon dioxide, it is most likely that a zero-carbon grid will include many technologies. The purpose of the study is to identify the many different roles that technologies will need to fill to bring reliable, low-cost, clean electricity to the state of California. The study is just getting started, so we don't have the results yet, but this short introduction provides contact information and we'll try to report back later.
