About Long Island Youth Orchestra
The Long Island Youth Orchestra (LIYO) is a permanent, internationally touring, audition-based Youth Orchestra serving young artists in the Nassau-Suffolk County region and Greater New York / Long Island area. In tandem with our mission, we cultivate, nurture, educate, and champion exceptionally gifted young musicians in order to grow their talent and prepare them for the many challenges of life in the ever-changing real world. With music as the catalyst for achieving our aims, LIYO seeks to foster a broad sense of social awareness, cultural intelligence, and emotional sentience in communities throughout Long Island and around the globe. Ultimately, LIYO wishes to create compassionate world citizens who are confident and ambitious leaders, ambassadors for the arts in their schools and communities as well as productive members of society. Founded in 1961 by Martin Dreiwitz, LIYO has long been a staple in the Greater New York area, primarily providing talented youth with access to high-quality music experiences and opportunities to rehearse and perform exceptionally challenging music rarely available to them in K-12 schools. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, LIYO exposes these young artists to as wide a musical spectrum as possible, representing many styles and periods during their affiliation with the orchestra. The orchestra also serves as the "training ground" for developing techniques that undoubtedly provide a unique advantage for those who may later wish to continue performing beyond high school. One of the most noteworthy features of LIYO, which sets it apart from all other youth orchestras of its kind, is its annual commitment to providing immersive cultural and international experiences through its summer concert tours. The ensemble has made over 40 international tours since 1971. This remarkable achievement makes the ensemble the premiere training orchestra for aspiring young musicians in the Greater New York area.
