Gill was an early years teacher in Christchurch where she discovered standard, sit-still techniques are actually counter-productive for preschoolers. “If you ask a young child to sit still and listen, they’re thinking about their chair, not you. But when you accommodate their natural need to move, you take the body out of the equation. Listening and learning gets easier for them, even if it doesn’t look like learning to us.” Based on her years of study, classroom practice, and chasing after three kids of her own, Gill founded Moving Smart Ltd., an independent education company and consultancy. Gill has lectured and consulted with school districts, governments, corporations and organizations all over the world. That's where she met Cheryl McCarthy, former Hasbro creative executive and V.P. of Intellectual Property Development.
