About Louisville Girls Leadership
Louisville Girls Leadership is a one to three year immersive leadership journey. Our community-wide program recruits girls from every public and private high school in Metro Louisville and brings that diverse group together to connect, learn, and transform. Designed for female students, ages 15 to 18 years old, participants have the opportunity to develop life skills and alliances that will enable them to become visionary community leaders. Led by a steering committee of diverse 11th and 12th grade girls, LGL gives young women the opportunity to grow as leaders and develop confidence by researching, discussing, and building key advocacy and civic skills. Each year, the LGL class consists of one 10th grade girl representative from each of 32 Jefferson County public and private high schools. School principals and counselors select a female student who has leadership potential, a strong academic record, a good work ethic, an interest in developing communication skills, and an openness to meeting other girls from diverse backgrounds. The girls directly involved in the program spend the year learning and developing in four focus areas. Their experience in the program ends in a culminating daylong conference called Girls IdeaFestival, where they share their knowledge with other teens and parents. Since 2013 Girls IdeaFestival has engaged over 500 local residents in conversations about how to develop creative and innovative solutions to challenges girls face today.
