About LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry

The Louisiana Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) School of Dentistry, established in 1968, is a public school and is the only dental school in Louisiana. Its mission is to educate future general dentists, specialists and dental auxiliaries with the skill, knowledge, ethical judgment and experience to provide competent oral health care. From a national perspective, it is unique among the dental schools in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology. By training students in all aspects of dentistry, we offer a level of training that has resulted in the school’s reputation of providing an outstanding clinical education in addition to exemplary accomplishments in research and community service. From 1972 to 2014, 5,384 dental health professionals have graduated from LSUSD. Today nearly 75 percent of the dental health care providers in our state are graduates. Our graduation rate is 98.9 percent. The LSUHSC School of Dentistry’s mission extends beyond education and includes patient care, research and community outreach. Students and residents provide dental care to Louisiana citizens in several locations statewide and participate in a wide range of community outreach efforts to educate citizens about the importance of proper oral health care. The school also includes a specialty center of oral & craniofacial biology, the only collaborative effort in the state focused on oral health research. In addition, the school is a key provider of continuing education to dental professionals statewide. The LSUHSC School of Dentistry is one of the six schools of LSUHSC.
