About Ma Ka Hana Ka Ike Building Program
Founded in 2000, Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike’s (MKHKI) mission is to provide youth with a way to learn that makes sense to them, that builds their self-esteem and shows them they have the power to change their future. Serving the rural community of Hana, East Maui, MKHKI engages approximately 700 residents annually. Our students’ many achievements over the past 17 years include completing: 35 cottages for local elders, 18 on-campus facilities, 7 photovoltaic systems and 19 solar hot water systems for local families, over 70 handicap-access improvements, and 48 collaborative projects with other nonprofits. We’ve also established a 10-acre community farm, and reclaimed cultural landscapes and practices. MKHKI employs the following highly-qualified team members: 7 staff, 5 graduate teachers, and 10 apprentices. MKHKI’s Executive Director and organization has been humbled by numerous awards including: the Maui Architectural Foundation’s Paepae I Ka Pohaku Award (2017); the Humanitarian of the Year Award (2016); a TEDx talk by Rick Rutiz (2014); Maui No Ka Oi's Environmental Hero Award (2012); the Maui Mayor’s Laulima Award for Environmental Leadership (2011); the Hawai`i State Governor’s Innovation Award (2010); Hana's Tiny Malaikini Mea Kokua Award (2009); Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement's Nonprofit of the Year Award (2004); and the Maui News' 1 of 10 People Who Make a Difference Award (2001).
