About Maine Island Trail Association
The Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) is a member organization dedicated to the enjoyment and stewardship of the wild islands of Maine. Founded in 1988, MITA developed America’s preeminent water trail and has become a model of sustainable outdoor recreation around the world. Originally comprised of 30 islands, the Maine Island Trail now boasts over 220 island and mainland sites and spans the entire coast from New Hampshire to Canada. MITA’s philosophy of handshake agreements with public and private landowners to provide stewardship centered around recreational use and access has proven to be a powerful model in maintaining healthy coastal lands for over three decades. MITA members receive numerous benefits, including access to events and programming, volunteer opportunities, and the Maine Island Trail App and Guide that both contain detailed information about the Trail and site access.
