About Mama Foundation for the Arts
Mama Foundation for the Arts Preserving, protecting, and promoting African American music through collective music-making. Founded in 1998 in Harlem, Mama Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to ensuring the legacy of African American music—especially gospel, jazz, and rhythm & blues—continues to thrive as a cornerstone of American culture. Our mission is to preserve, protect, and promote African American music through collective music-making. We do this by providing tuition-free and low-cost music education, professional performance opportunities, and community-based programming that uplifts and empowers individuals across generations. At Mama Foundation, we believe in the transformative power of music to educate, heal, and connect. Our work centers around three core pillars: ENRICHMENT We offer accessible, high-quality music training to youth, young adults, and older adults through free and affordable programs. Students receive vocal instruction, cultural education, and mentorship rooted in Black musical traditions. PERFORMANCE Through original productions and curated showcases, our students and alumni perform on local and national stages—gaining real-world experience while celebrating the power and beauty of Black music. COMMUNITY From free community concerts to intergenerational events, we create welcoming spaces for individuals to come together through music—strengthening cultural identity, fostering belonging, and inspiring collective joy. As a Harlem-based institution, we are proud to carry forward the neighborhood’s legacy of cultural innovation, artistic excellence, and Black leadership. By investing in the next generation of artists and honoring the traditions of the past, Mama Foundation serves as a vital force in the preservation and celebration of African American music. 📍 Learn more or support our work at mamafoundation.org
