About Marginalia Literary and Arts Press and Magazine

Inspired by Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," Adwa Aljubair, a Saudi Writing MFA Candidate at Columbia University, founded MARGINALIA, an independent literary and arts press and magazine in 2024. MARGINALIA is run by MFA students, alums, and writers/artists based in New York City. Our mission is to recreate the "aura" of works of art in the age of digital reproduction, reestablish the personal relationship between writers/artists and publishers, and promote new voices through reading events and craft workshops. MARGINALIA publishes two magazines, namely, MARGINALIA: THE REVIEW, an annual literary magazine, and NEW YORK DIARIES, a biannual literary magazine. Our writers and artists walk the line between seeming opposites, i.e., timeless yet contemporary, ephemeral yet resonant, concrete yet abstract, mundane yet off-center, close yet withdrawn, explicit yet ambivalent, measured yet off-beat, composed yet discursive, curated yet subversive, savage yet poetic—they are revisionist never derivative—they are deviant not merely transgressive.
