About Martha Cook Alumnae Association
“It must be a college home, inspiring cultured courtesy, sincere friendship, devoted service, integrity of character, industry, self-reliance, sound scholarship, and an appreciation of the finer things of life." – William C. Cook The Martha Cook Building was the first women's residence at the University of Michigan. In June 1918, alumnae who were visiting Martha Cook at commencement met and organized the original Martha Cook Alumnae Association (MCAA). In 1927, the organization was reestablished as the “Martha Cook Alumnae Association of Detroit”. The present MCAA serves a worldwide membership exceeding 4,000 women. The MCAA is managed by a board of directors, which consists of a group of alumnae volunteers who actively serve the Martha Cook Building while facilitating camaraderie and networking among alumnae members. Various Board activities include assisting in awarding scholarships (including the Anne E. Shipman Stevens Scholarship) to current residents; sponsoring two formal alumnae gatherings a year, including an annual Spring Tea at the Martha Cook Building; organizing informal mentoring events; and making various donations of monies, materials, and time to the Martha Cook Building and its residents. The MCAA also publishes a print newsletter twice yearly that is mailed to alumnae. Anyone interested in joining a committee or submitting a "Cookie Crumb" about an alumna should send a note to MCAA@umich.edu. This email alias reaches every member of the current board of directors.
