About Mātai Hāora - Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch

We are a group of scientists who have combined their expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology to establish one of the most recognised centres for redox biology in the world. One of our strengths has been a focus on unravelling the fundamental molecular processes involved in the generation and fate of oxidants in biological systems. The knowledge obtained from these detailed studies is currently being applied to projects that are: 1. Developing new types of antibiotics that work by helping our immune system use oxygen to kill bacteria that cause serious infections. 2. Guiding clinical management by using the damage caused by immune cell oxidants to assist with the diagnosis of pathogenic bacteria in patients. 3. Disrupting the antioxidant defences of cancer cells to limit their ability to proliferate and spread, and to prevent them from becoming resistant to targeted therapeutics. 4. Detecting early signs of damage in inflammatory diseases to assist with treatment decisions and the testing of new drugs. 5. Measuring the stress placed on our mitochondria and cells as we age, thereby helping to understand the ageing process and monitor strategies aimed at reducing the burden of age-related disease. We also sell kits for measuring biomarkers of oxidative stress to other laboratories, under the trading name Redox Innovation: https://www.redoxinnovation.co.nz/. We were University of Otago Research Group of the Year in 2022. Want to learn more or collaborate with us? Email us at redoxbiology@otago.ac.nz
