About Matumaini Care Support Services

Matumaini means “hope” in Swahili. We believe that “All children, youth, and families – regardless of their beginnings – have the right to services designed to promote healing and unity. Through Matumaini Care Support’s provision of medically based, culturally informed, and client or family-focused services, we endeavor to provide care with compassion, passion, skills, and knowledge with the utmost respect for an individual’s unique cultural identity.” Our program provides specialized supports and cares for medically fragile children with complex needs, including alternative feeding methods like gastrostomy (G-tube and J-tubes), tracheostomy care, ostomies, urostomy, and insulin-dependent and many other conditions that fragile medical needs may require. Our program also incorporates care for children with cognitive development issues, including Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) and Neurological disorders such as seizures. We can admit children from 0 to 16. We focus on children who may need temporary placements as they wait to be transitioned back to their communities; some may be stable enough to leave the hospital but not stable enough to safely transition back home or to their communities. Other children may be awaiting custody to be worked out, or maybe children in the custody of Children Services. Our staffing model includes a registered nurse (RN), licensed practical nurse (LPN), Social Workers, Youth Workers, behavior therapists, and personal care support workers (HCA). The overall goal and emphasis are on the quality of life, social well-being, and an inclusive environment that considers family values and cultural background as key to achieving this goal. Finally, our program is unique because it is a culturally competent program that has incorporated Indigenous peoples' cultural values and beliefs.
