About Mawson's Huts Foundation
THE MAWSON’S HUTS FOUNDATION IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT CHARITY ESTABLISHED IN 1996 TO CONSERVE THE ORIGINAL HUTS AT THE MAWSON’S HUTS HISTORIC SITE AT CAPE DENISON, EAST ANTARCTICA, WHICH WERE USED BY THE AUSTRALASIAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1911-14, LED BY SIR DOUGLAS MAWSON. Since then, the Foundation has funded and organised 14 major expeditions to the historic site to carry out conservation and maintenance work, which it does in partnership with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). To assist with fundraising and helping to promote the AAE’s story for present and future generations, the Foundation built and operates the Mawson’s Huts Replica Mawson on Hobart’s waterfront. Tripadvisor rates it as the no.1 museum in Hobart, and it’s in the top 25 museums in the South Pacific. The Foundation also runs the Mobile Antarctic Classroom - a travelling science and education program for Tasmanian school children - and hosts the award-winning Australian Antarctic Festival, which is held every two years.
