About Mayors for a Guaranteed Income
Economic insecurity isn’t a new challenge. Wealth and income inequality, which have long plagued our country, continue to grow. Even prior to the pandemic, people who were working two and three jobs still couldn’t afford basic necessities. COVID-19 has only further exposed the economic fragility of most American households, and has disproportionately impacted Black and brown people. Building off his first-of-its-kind guaranteed income pilot (SEED) and rooted in Dr. King’s legacy, Mayor Michael D. Tubbs (Stockton, CA) founded Mayors for a Guaranteed Income in June 2020. Member Mayors commit to our statement of principles, and: 1) advocate for a guaranteed income; 2) invest in narrative change efforts to highlight the lived experience of economic insecurity; 3) invite other cities to join MGI effort. Since launching, MGI has grown its ranks from 11 to 125 mayors. We have supported the launch of 28 guaranteed income pilots across the country, with an additional 15 in the pipeline. In total, these pilots will deliver more than $100 million in direct, unconditional relief to everyday Americans. We’ve also helped shift public support on guaranteed income, with a bipartisan majority (55%) of Americans now supporting a guaranteed income.
