About Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana
Meals on Wheels began service in 1977 in southern Lake County, Indiana as part of the Visiting Nurse Association. At that time, meals were obtained from hospitals and nursing homes and delivered to individuals in their home. As our program continued to grow, it was necessary to open a central kitchen to prepare meals for our clients. In 1993, we purchased a building in Crown Point . We outgrew the facility in 2002 when our meal count numbers grew to over 1,200 meals daily for clients living throughout Lake County and in 2006 moved to our current location. We provide nutritious meals and Medically Tailored Meal Intervention to clients in Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, Starke, and Pulaski counties in Indiana.
