About Med Access International

Med Access International is a Palm Desert, California-based non-profit 501 (c)(3) charity organization that provides basic healthcare and hygiene education, medical diagnoses, prescriptions, prosthetics and life-changing surgeries to some of the most impoverished people of Central and South America and the Caribbean. We have no paid staff. We are comprised exclusively of volunteers who cover their own costs of travel to participate in our humanitarian missions. We do fundraising through our website and through special events to raise money to pay for the medicines and supplies we use on each medical mission. We select locations for our medical missions in concert with local health officials who highlight specific communities where people suffer the most from poverty, lack of education and limited healthcare services. We recruit volunteers for our medical missions based on their professional education, licensing and experience. We seek volunteers from every healthcare specialty, including dentistry; optometry; general surgery; orthopedic surgery, plastic and maxillofacial surgery; internal medicine; obstetrics and gynecology; pediatrics; urology; physical therapy; prosthetics; and pharmacy. We also seek surgical and medical support team volunteers, including anesthesiologists, nurses, surgical technicians and interpreters. We also utilize a limited number of student volunteers on our missions, provided they can fulfill specific mission support functions identified by our Board of Directors. Our past mission locations include Ecuador, Nicaragua, India, Peru, El Salvador, Paraguay, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
