About Medical Professional Liability Association
The MPL Association is the leading international association representing medical professional liability insurance companies, risk retention groups, captives, trusts, and other entities with a commitment to the quality delivery of healthcare. MPL Association members insure nearly 2.5 million healthcare professionals around the world—doctors, dentists, oral surgeons, nurses and nurse practitioners, podiatrists, and other healthcare providers. MPL Association members also insure more than 3,000 hospitals and 50,000 medical facilities and group practices globally. Twitter: www.twitter.com/MPLassociation Facebook: www.facebook.com/MPLassociation In the 1970s, physicians faced a rapidly disappearing insurance market. Out of options, they banded together with insurance professionals and organized medicine to form a new breed of insurance company: the physician-owned medical professional liability insurance carrier. Eventually these new kinds of companies were launched throughout the nation. These new companies differed from the commercial insurance carriers, in philosophy and in extent of commitment to their insureds. They pledged to provide affordable insurance protection, and also to find ways to minimize risk among their physician colleagues. In 1977, those newly established companies formed the Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA) to provide a forum for exchanging information and solving problems. The PIAA would also serve as an advocate for an affordable and dependable medical liability insurance market. Just as MPL organizations face a changing environment, so too did PIAA. In 2017, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to change the Association’s name to the Medical Professional Liability Association. This name better positions the Association to keep pace with the change its members and the evolving MPL community are experiencing.
