Acute and chronic medical conditions for a host of illnesses have to undergo applications for funding under what is known as the Individual Funding Request (“IFR”) process. Cancers including carcinomas, leukamias, lymphomas, sarcomas, or brain tumours which are diagnosed in the metastatic phase are also sometimes subject to restrictions on funding of treatment. Consultants on behalf of patients have to undergo the process of applying to a panel of the PCT, and sometimes having to appeal from that panel.
