THE CHALLENGE Clinical sites, large and small, in developing countries, do not have the basic supplies and equipment to conduct regular healthcare activities, leading to illness and deaths due to a lack of medical supplies in some communities. At the same time, other hospitals, manufacturers, and clinical sites have a surplus of new and quality used supplies and equipment that are routinely thrown into landfills adding to environmental issues and even creating hazardous environments. We can close this gap! However, if the World Health Organization donation guidelines and other standards are not followed, sending inappropriate supplies and equipment creates an additional burden for these already low-resourced health facilities. OUR APPROACH Founded in 2012, the MedSurplus Alliance (MSA) is the only cross-sector multidisciplinary alliance working collaboratively to improve access to quality donated medical supplies, equipment, and medicine through voluntary standards, self-assessment tools, and external program assessment and accreditation.
