In 2009 my dad died. This meant that my son never had the opportunity to meet him, but as soon as he could talk, he asked lots of questions, how did he die? Why did he die? Will I get to meet him? Talking about death became very normal within our family unit, not something to be fearful of but a part of life. In 2020 the world experienced Covid. I realised that many adults don't know how to talk to their children about death. This got me thinking, we prepare our children for all of these milestones in life, but why is it so hard to talk about death? Everyone at some point in their life will experience grief, be it the death of a loved one, a pet, the end of a relationship or job even. We often experience denial, anger, bargaining, depression before finally acceptance- and that's the adults. Children from as young as 2 have presented with emotions of grief, if they are not supported with this in a sympathetic and supportive way it can lead to issues throughout the remainder of their lives. On the back of that Memories Box was born. The concept is to help families and carers to have open and honest discussions with the children in their care, by using the box and it’s contents to help them prepare for or manage bereavement, through crafts, art therapy and the story. The box is a premium, contemporary, streamline and elegant look white box measuring 30X30X9cm White matt laminated finish throughout. Concealed magnetic snap shut front flap closure. Each box contains an age appropriate book about grief, a craft item and paints to personalise the box. I have always been open with Jack about death and my beliefs, but by reading all of the books (& believe me he's wanted to read them all), we've been able to take that discussion further. He now has a great understanding of death and how I feel about it, I hope that he can carry this knowledge forward & not be scared or fearful and one day give others the support and understanding that we all need at times.
