About Mental Health Storytelling Initiative
The Mental Health Storytelling Initiative harnesses the power of storytelling to transform how mental health is seen, understood, and prioritized in our cultural narrative. We are a groundbreaking alliance of 70+ organizations—from major studios and production companies to leading mental health organizations—working collaboratively to ensure mental health stories are told with authenticity, nuance, and impact. Our work includes: - Creating resources like the Mental Health Media Guide and Digital Storytelling Guide - Facilitating direct partnerships between mental health experts and content creators - Providing training and consultation for authentic mental health portrayals - Supporting innovative collaborative projects across all platforms - Amplifying powerful mental health narratives that reduce stigma Founded in partnership with MTV Entertainment Studios and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, we've now established ourselves as an independent organization to expand our impact and create more opportunities for authentic mental health storytelling. Studies show that accurate mental health portrayals can reduce stigma, increase help-seeking behaviors, and make people feel less alone. With young people facing unprecedented mental health challenges, we believe media has the power to transform how we understand, talk about, and support mental health. Together, we're creating a world where mental health is understood, prioritized, and integrated into cultural narratives through authentic and resonant storytelling.
