About Mercer Medicine
Mercer Medicine, the clinical faculty practice affiliated with Mercer University School of Medicine, aligns with the school's mission to address primary care and healthcare requirements in underserved rural areas of Georgia. Established in 2005 on the Mercer University campus in Macon, Mercer Medicine has expanded its presence statewide. In 2014, the practice relocated to its current headquarters at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Macon, occupying the former Georgia Music Hall of Fame site. In August 2018, Mercer Medicine took a significant step by opening its inaugural rural clinic in Plains, Georgia, with the endorsement of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. This initiative stemmed from discussions initiated by President Carter, a Life Trustee at Mercer, and Mrs. Carter, following the closure of the Plains Medical Center in March 2018. Mercer Medicine Plains became a reality a few months later, serving as a blueprint for subsequent clinics under the Mercer Medicine umbrella. To fulfill its commitment to addressing healthcare needs in rural Georgia, Mercer Medicine expanded its reach. It established rural health clinics in Peach County in October 2019 (later moved to Taylor County), Clay County in November 2020, Putnam County in March 2021, Harris County in April 2022, Glynn County in September 2023, and Taylor County in October 2023. The organization continues to develop additional clinic locations to extend its impact.
