About Merlin Powder Characterisation
Merlin Powder Characterisation specialise in compaction testing of pharmaceutical powders using a hydraulic Compaction Simulator. Our scientists will test, measure and characterise a range of powder properties (powder compaction, powder flow and powder density) for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, excipients or formulated powder blends for tableting. The hydraulic compaction simulator can be used to mimic the profile shape and operating settings of any production press using the integrated software Profile builder and Press profiler. This provides valuable information for scale-up prediction, lubricant sensitivity, sticking/picking issues and trouble-shooting during production. Compaction testing helps scientists understand the compression behaviour of powdered materials which in turn facilitates the design of more robust tablet formulations. With continuous dry granulation processes becoming more popular, the compaction simulator can be set to replicate a Roller Compactor providing compressibility information and solid fraction data on the slugs/ribbons. This is achieved using science of scale techniques, where a small amount of powder is used to reliably predict large scale behaviour. In addition, Powder flow is measured and characterised using a Schulze Shear Cell RST-XS and true density is measured using a Helium Pycnometer. Merlin Powder Characterisation is based in the Midlands, UK. Our client base is wide ranging and includes excipient suppliers, pharmaceutical companies, SMEs and UK universities.
