About Metro Vancouver Aborginal Executive Council
The Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Executive Council (MVAEC) is a united voice for the nearly 70,000 Urban Indigenous people living off-reserve in Metro Vancouver. Formed in 2009 and composed of 22 member organizations, MVAEC represents a broad network of agencies delivering programs and services across diverse sectors including health, housing, education, culture, justice, and community development. As a Think and Lead organization, MVAEC does not provide direct services. Instead, we focus on shaping policies, advocating for equitable investments, and driving coordinated action that addresses the systemic barriers faced by Urban Indigenous communities. We convene regular Council and Round Table meetings with our members to set priorities, discuss emerging issues, and strengthen collaboration across the region. MVAEC plays a critical leadership role in advancing Urban Indigenous inclusion in decision-making processes at the municipal, regional, provincial, and federal levels. We work closely with governments, institutions, and non-profit partners to advocate for sustainable investments and policy changes that reflect the unique needs of Indigenous people living in urban settings—needs that are often overlooked despite the fact that more than 60% of Indigenous people now live in cities. Over the years, MVAEC has built strong partnerships with local governments, businesses, academic institutions, and community groups. We welcome collaboration with organizations, policymakers, and community leaders who share our vision for a stronger, more equitable Metro Vancouver. Together, we are committed to ensuring that Urban Indigenous voices are heard, respected, and included in building a future that honours Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and self-determination.
