About MHE - Materials Handling Equipment
MHE - Materials Handling Equipment Co. was formed in the 1920’s in Chicago, IL to support the demands of new and expanding industries of the era. Advancing technologies within conveyor design were affording industry an opportunity to improve production while reducing costs. New process techniques generated the need for custom-built bulk handling equipment. MHE became the leaders in this market and pioneered many features used today for high temperature, high abrasion, and extremely corrosive applications. In addition to being one of the original founding members of CEMA, their engineering staff was considered experts in material handling conveyor design. As one of the industry’s leading experts, MHE helped shape and develop standards for screw conveyors and bucket elevators. In the 1930’s, MHE expanded its product line to focus on specific Industry needs. Realizing the severe conditions in the Cement Industry, MHE developed the original Cement Mill Class Bucket Elevators, Drag Conveyors, and Screw Conveyors. Ash handling at Power Plants required special conveyors as well to handle hot and abrasive materials. Coal handling was also a major bulk material that was experiencing premature conveyor failures which required specialized designs and corrosive protection. Over the next 3 decades found MHE expanding into other industries requiring Apron Conveyors. In 1973 Jervis B. Webb Company purchased MHE to expand their product line and consolidated the operation to Marietta, Georgia. Today, Materials Handling Equipment Co. continues its proud 97-year heritage as a subsidiary of Merrick Industries.
