About Mid-Atlantic Crossroads

Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) is a GigaPoP (Gigabit Point of Presence) organization that was founded in 1999. We are a network access point that supports high-bandwidth, high performance data transfer and provides advanced network services that enable our participants to successfully fulfill their organizational missions. MAX provides its participants with connectivity to Internet2, National LambdaRail (NLR), and various commodity Internet providers. MAX is a member of and a direct connector to Internet2 and is a provider of NLR services through a collaboration with Virginia Tech. Our proximity to Washington, DC provides us the opportunity to collaborate with federal agencies and laboratories as well as the local research and education community in the Mid-Atlantic region. MAX supports a number of campuses whose astronomy, biology, environmental science, computer science, engineering, geo-science, and physical science communities have large scale data flow requirements. MAX’s 39 participants include universities, federal agencies, government laboratories, and non-profit institutions in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. MAX is also involved in a number of research activities through federally-funded research projects. We conduct research in some core areas around dynamic optical networks, control plane architectures, network management, optical performance, and network virtualization. MAX is an active participant in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Global Environment For Network Innovations (GENI) program.
