About Midwest Prairies
Midwest Prairies restores and improves prairie, savanna, woodland, and wetland habitats. At Midwest Prairies we subscribe to the concept of ecological health. Ecological health is defined as an ecosystem that is diverse in floral and faunal species; includes multiple age classes of representative species; and is capable of withstanding disturbances like wind and fire. As the Native Americans did for thousands of years, we typically work with natural processes such as fire, selective harvesting or thinning, and by spreading the seeds of desirable plants. However, in the modern age of invasive species, we frequently must use herbicides and powered mechanical equipment to jump start the process. Ecological health is a process as much as a goal. Ecosystems like prairies, savannas, forests and wetlands do not exist in a static state. They are always changing. Land owners have the option to do nothing to manage their lands. But that will not stop change from happening. Often, when left unmanaged, prairies revert to scrub lands dominated by invasive multiflora rose, savannas revert to woodlands dominated by boxelder and prickly ash, and forests become overgrown with invasive plants like garlic mustard, buckthorn and honeysuckle. Land owners can also choose to manage their lands consistently and with the goal of improving ecological health in mind. The good news is that when ecological health is improved, the land becomes more useful to people and more beautiful to behold: animals occur in abundance, flowers bloom, and people find that experiential joy that only nature can provide. Midwest Prairies, LLC is dedicated to helping property owners restore, manage and improve their natural lands using the most efficient and proven techniques available. We provide services that are cost effective and carefully executed to assist land owners in restoring health to their lands. Every project is the personal responsibility of the owner, Carl Korfmacher.
