About Military Order of Foreign Wars - New York
The New York Commandery of the Military Order of Foreign Wars was founded by military officers in New York City on 27 December 1894. Who We Are: • Our members are known as “Companions.” Our state headquarters is in New York City and we also have our Niagara Frontier Chapter, located in upstate New York. • Our Companions display a healthy degree of sartorial enthusiasm at our events, almost all of which are jacket and tie / female equivalent. • We emphasize the importance of fellowship among our Companions, each with different temperaments, talents and convictions, and all united in their appreciation for service to our nation during a time of war. • We meet regularly throughout the year. We host cocktail receptions, have a yearly dinner and attend functions of other organizations such as Flag Day at St. Thomas Church, and the Flag Parade hosted by the Sons of the Revolution in June. Eligibility. There are three, basic categories of eligibility: • A Veteran Companion. Men and women who served as Commissioned or Warrant Officers during a time of war or specified military expeditions (Active Duty, activated Reserve/National Guard, Coast Guard). Wars include, but are not limited to, Iraq, Afghanistan, and expeditions supporting the Global War on Terrorism. Service during wartime does not require deployment to a declared combat zone. Accordingly, those who provide documentation they received the National Defense Service Medal are typically eligible to apply. Expeditionary and campaign medals, such as the Kosovo Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal also typically make an applicant eligible. • Hereditary Companion. Men and women who are lineal descendants (child, grandchild, great-grandchild, et al) of veterans as described above. • Allied Companion. Officers of Allies of the United States during a time of war, or lineal descendants of such officers.
