About Minds Matter Colorado
Minds Matter Colorado is one of 14 Minds Matter chapters across the nation that works to provide high-achieving, low income students with the support necessary for future success. MMCO seeks to close the achievement gap and increase college admissions rates for low income students in Colorado. We take on this challenge with 100 percent success by offering personalized mentoring and a rigorous program schedule to a selection of Colorado high school students. With our help we consistently see an increase in students’ academic performance, improved leadership skills and higher SAT scores. Minds Matter Colorado is not the typical college prep course or mentoring program. Minds Matter Colorado targets high-achieving, low income students, who, despite early academic success, face challenges in achieving college admission as first generation college-bound students. MMCO works to support and provide these students with what they need to make college a reality. This includes an intense curriculum focused on writing, critical thinking, public speaking and debate skills as a supplement to their high school course work. The MMCO program begins in the sophomore year, lasts through the senior year and brings a focus to different aspects of the college preparation process. Minds Matter Colorado is committed to each student. Every student has two mentors devoted to their growth and achievement. Mentors are typically young professionals who possess an unwavering belief in the power of education. Our commitment does not end there. MMCO provides transportation and access to laptops, Internet, meals, certified test prep specialists and leadership. All of these efforts are successful because of volunteers; our volunteers make the dreams of these students’ a reality. Since its inception in 2004, MMCO has had 100 percent of its students apply and get accepted to a four-year college or university with some form of scholarship funding.
