This provides the Speech Language Pathologist with a true picture of a patient’s functional swallow ability. Delivered bedside, a patient can remain in the comfort of their own room and the exam does not require the use of barium or exposure to radiation. Mobile Endoscopix offers an on-site diagnostic swallow evaluation in which you, the treating SLP can participate. A FEES certified SLP passes a flexible endoscope through the base of the nasal pathway in order to closely view the pharynx, larynx, and upper esophageal opening. Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES) is a well-established, ASHA supported procedure that has consistently provided sensitivity equal to VFSS/MBS in determining aspiration, penetration, and swallow timing. It provides improved viewing and understanding of the cause of pharyngeal residue and sensory dysfunction. The patient’s personal food preferences can be used during the study for more realistic measures. FEES can be utilized as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. It is a safe and quick process, which allows you to immediately determine the safest, least restrictive diet. It gives you the advantage of providing compensatory swallowing instructions during the procedure with real time feedback of the patient’s response. The procedure can be easily repeated after a few weeks of swallowing treatment to view the effectiveness of your interventions.
