About Montana State Hospital
MSH provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults with serious mental illness. It is the only public psychiatric hospital in Montana and serves people admitted from communities across the state. The facility includes 174 licensed hospital beds; 42 adult group home beds; and 54 forensic mental health facility beds (270 beds total). Funding for the hospital comes from a state general fund appropriation. Admission occurs via procedures established in state law and only when the individual's needs exceed the capacity of community mental health services to provide treatment and care. Treatment is coordinated with community mental health providers and families to the greatest extent possible.
