About More than Grandparents

More than Grandparents (Sunderland) was formed by a group of Grandparent/Kinship Carers (now referred to by statutory services as Connected Carers or Family and Friends Carers) because we were being made aware of more and more Carers raising the children of family and friends needing support with difficult and emotive choices resulting from family trauma. We aim to raise awareness of the experiences of Kinship Children so that they themselves feel less isolated and no different to other children We aim to raise awareness of the issues Family and Friends Carers face, from financial difficulties to dealing with statutory and voluntary agencies to dealing with contact arrangements and much more besides. We aim to help Family and Friends Carers understand their rights and entitlements and sources of support available to them and their children to minimise the risk of families living in poverty. We aim to assist Family and Friends Carers in becoming more confident when involved with professionals from agencies by empowering them to share their thoughts and feelings in a safe way. We aim to help Family and Friends Carers and their children to have a better sense of wellbeing and minimise their feelings of isolation by offering 1-1 support, advice and guidance, group support and recreational opportunities.
