About Morro Bay National Estuary Program
The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is a nonprofit that works collaboratively with citizens, organizations, agencies, and landowners to protect and restore the Morro Bay estuary for people and wildlife. Through community efforts, Morro Bay was established as a California State Estuary in 1994 and one of only 28 Estuaries of National Significance in 1995. The Estuary Program has three branches: *Monitoring and Research - Staff and volunteers collect data on water quality, bacteria levels, sediment accumulation and more in the Morro Bay estuary and watershed. *Conservation and Restoration - With our partners, we have protected 400 acres of critical habitat for wildlife and to restore over 4,000 acres of land in the Morro Bay watershed. Our Rural Roads Restoration Project is projected to keep 1,225 tons of sediment from entering the bay each year for the next decade. *Education and Outreach - Our Morro Bay Estuary Nature Center is free and open to the public seven days a week. 30,000 people visit each year to watch wildlife from the bay-view windows and to learn more about what makes Morro Bay so special.
