About MU Community Engaged Learning

MU Community Engaged Learning (previously known as the Office of Service Learning) was established in 1995 and serves as a catalyst for academically-based community outreach, providing support, consultation, and partnership maintenance with service agencies and organizations across the state of Missouri. At MU, our Community Engaged/Service Learning courses seamlessly integrate academic coursework with meaningful community service. Our mission is simple yet impactful: to empower students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, fostering engaged and effective citizens, while simultaneously enriching their learning experiences through active community engagement. Each semester, hundreds of MU students enroll in Community Engaged/Service Learning courses, embarking on credited service opportunities within our local community. Through these experiences, students not only contribute to addressing real needs in society but also cultivate essential personal and professional skills vital for their future endeavors. Since 1995, students have served 4,330,429 hours and have contributed the equivalent of $61,136,639 back to the State of Missouri (rate provided by Independent Sector). By working with MU Community Engaged Learning, students not only commit to serving their communities but also uphold the standards of professionalism and accountability. We provide ongoing support to ensure students fulfill their commitments, fostering a culture of responsibility and integrity within our university community.
