The Munich International Stone Center for Inequality Research (ISI) at LMU Munich is an interdisciplinary hub dedicated to one of today’s most urgent challenges: social inequality—with a particular focus on wealth. Our work explores how inequality is created, sustained, and potentially reduced across societies. We combine rigorous empirical research with global, interdisciplinary collaboration to better understand the systems—economic, political, and cultural—that shape the distribution of resources and opportunities. From tax structures to inheritance patterns, ISI investigates the mechanisms of inequality across generations and geographies. We aim to produce research that is not only analytically robust, but also socially relevant. As part of an international network supported by the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation, ISI contributes to a growing global effort to address inequality through knowledge, dialogue, and innovation.
