About Murier Ecosystem Services

Murier Ecosystem Services takes its name from the Acadian French for mulberry, Morus rubra, native to much of the eastern United States. While it is wind pollinated, the small flowers still attract various pollinating insects. In simply growing, the mulberry acts as a phytoremediator, pulling heavy metals from nearby soil. The leaves can be made into medicinal tea, and bark fibers can be woven into rope. The berries, once ripe, provide food for countless birds and animals. Humans eat the berries raw or make jellies and even wine. Finally, the dark pigment of the berries has been used as a natural ink for hundreds of years. Yet, despite all the above benefits, red mulberries are reviled by some in urban settings for its ability to stain concrete sidewalks and cars. And so, as humans often do, we imported the white mulberry, which has escaped cultivation and become invasive, but doesn't stain sidewalks. Much like the mulberry conundrum, the push for native landscaping and water-conscious landscaping, whether in excess or scarcity, has met hesitancy and even resistance, as these plants may not conform to the right angles and even lines of traditional landscaping. But nature abhors a right angle and a clean line. We should not strive to master nature and bend it to our whims and beauty standards, but instead live in harmony with the species that predate our existence. Murier Ecosystem Services strives to recreate the pre-development landscape, full of lush native species, capable of reducing flooding, cleaning the air and water, and providing for native animal and pollinator species and humans alike.
