About Muzzle Velocity Radar
According to its operating principle, the MVR is a specialized radar station. The velocity measurement process is initiated by the timing sensors. The MVR implements three types of sensors differing in the physical effects used: the optical one (reactive to light), the acoustical (reactive to sound) and the accelerometric (reactive to vibration). There is also a provision for connection of an external timing sensor. As the projectile exits the gun barrel, the sensor shapes a signal for the computer, according to which the computer starts the transmitter, which sends via the transmitting part of the antenna a very-high-frequency (hereinafter – VHF) probing pulse. The VHF probing pulse is reflected from the outbound projectile, returns back to the receiving part of the antenna and further, via the receive path, to the computer. Due to the Doppler effect, the reflected pulse carrier frequency is so much smaller than the probing pulse carrier frequency, as the higher is the velocity of the outbound projectile. The computer determines the projectile velocity as per the Doppler frequency. The result is displayed on the Remote Control Panel (RCP) screen.
