Shafts are often dug by hand, and mercury is commonly used to extract gold from ore—a toxic process that not only endangers human health and the environment but also leaves much of the gold unrecovered. Mwamba's ASGM interventions harness modern technologies and industry expertise to help partner miners safely maximize the full potential of their projects. Mines are engineered according to their unique characteristics, and all gold produced is processed in mercury-free, state-of-the-art facilities. Mwamba is globally recognized as a pioneer in sustainable mining reform and is a member of the UNEP's Global Mercury Partnership. The company also serves as a private sector advisor to the GEF-funded, UNEP-led planetGOLD Program.
