In many areas of the world, the ability to forecast floods is limited by access to rainfall and river level data. Access to flood forecasts and warnings is proven to save lives, and can empower communities to respond to floods and reduce their impact. We are developing a free on-line service for forecasting agencies to access rain and river data collected by the community using their mobile phones. For context, in India more than half of the adult population have mobile phones, including widespread use throughout village areas. We propose to tap into this resource.
