About National Anti-Roadkill Project
Conservative estimates indicate that in the United States over 1 million vertebrate animals are killed by wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) every day, yet there are no NGOs that have as their mission to ameliorate the roadkill issue. The fledgling National Anti-Roadkill Project (NARP) distinguishes itself as the only NGO whose mission is to protect wildlife from the hazards of our highways and roads. The mission of NARP is to protect wildlife that are at risk of deaths and debilitating injuries (oftentimes leaving behind helpless orphans) when forced to cross roads for their survival. NARP aims to significantly reduce the unconscionable number of deaths and countless crippling injuries that wildlife suffers as a result of being stricken by motor vehicles. This aim is largely achievable by implementing driver safety measures and road safety measures that can curtail avoidable WVCs. This endeavor is particularly critical for endangered species, such as the Florida panther, since road kills are a leading cause of death of this iconic feline. Once NARP is operational, its initial campaign will address the plight of the critically endangered Florida panther by zealously focusing on driver and road safety measures that will effectuate roadkill mitigation and help to save the precious few panthers from the brink of extinction. NARP intends to significantly reduce the fatalities to wildlife on our roads as much as feasible by embarking on campaigns deploying a multi-dimensional approach commensurate with the magnitude of the problem. This initiative will make a difference for the defenseless creatures that are caught in the trap of the network of roads that invade their habitat. The time is long past due to address this critical issue head-on with a new paradigm that finds it unacceptable to continue the mindset that maiming and killing wildlife is simply a price to pay for the convenience of driving in the modern age.
