About National Center for Adaptive Neurotechnologies (NCAN)
The National Center for Adaptive Neurotechnologies is based in Albany, N.Y., and is the culmination of a unique research and development program that has grown and flourished at the Wadsworth Center over the last several decades. Driven by the pressing needs of people with severe neuromuscular disorders, and by the energy of scientists, engineers and clinicians seeking to understand and overcome these disorders, its principal objective is to accelerate the development, clinical translation and wide dissemination of the adaptive neurotechnologies that Wadsworth scientists and engineers have endeavored toward. NCAN is supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health. NCAN strives to produce and validate new neurotechnologies, and to provide training and dissemination to enable scientists, engineers and clinicians worldwide to join in, use and aid in further development. The center not only produces groundbreaking neurotechnologies, but translates them into new, effective therapies for the treatment of spinal cord injuries, stroke and other devastating neurological disorders. It is the only neurotechnology center in the country funded by NIH, and is the only center of its kind that works with patients.
