About National Tramway Museum
The Tramway Museum Society (TMS) is a group of like -minded people who are interested in the preservation of trams and the promotion of tramway history to the public, because trams at one time were the principal, if not the only, form of urban transport and no-one else appeared to be saving any for posterity. The Society was founded in 1955, and after several years of hard work, its members had converted a disused quarry, located to the north of the village of Crich in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak District, into the fledgling Crich Tramway Museum. The Society became a registered charity in 1962, and Crich Tramway Museum expanded and grew its collection, eventually becoming the National Tramway Museum in 1980. It is now an Accredited Museum and is home to a world renowned vintage tram fleet, as well as vast collections of photographs and archive materials. The Museum’s collections are one of the most comprehensive collections of trams and tramway history in the world. All the Museum’s collections are Designated as being of National importance and at the core of the collection is the Tramcar fleet which comprises over 70 historic vehicles. Based at Crich Tramway Village, it has become a seasonal attraction with over 100,000 visitors a year between March and October
