About Nationwide Health and Disability Advocacy Service
Nationwide Health and Disability Advocacy Service has thirty-five advocates located around the country in twenty community-based offices from Kaitaia to Invercargill. Advocates work with these communities to ensure they are aware of their rights, as well as educating health and disability providers on how to make their services more responsive to these consumers. A bit about our background… The Health and Disability Commissioner’s Act was passed in Parliament in 1994 and the Code of Health & Disability Services Consumers’ Rights came in to effect on 1 July 1996. Under the Act, a nationwide consumer advocacy service was established to promote the rights and to assist consumers who feel their rights have not been respected. Consumers who make complaints are keen to see service improvements so the early resolution of concerns and complaints with an advocate often includes a focus on actions to improve service quality. The advocacy service is free, confidential and independent of health and disability service providers. Our Advocates are available to provide free education sessions on consumer rights and provider responsibilities, as well as the role of the Health and Disability Commissioner and how an advocate can assist. Consumers can also order free resources via our website www.advocacy.org.nz Anyone who wants information about the Code of Rights, how to organize a free education session, or believes that their rights under the Code of Health & Disability Services Consumers’ Rights have not been respected can call us on Freephone 0800-555 050, or visit our website www.advocacy.org.nz for email, LiveChat, and Contact Form contact options to have an Advocate contact them.
