Náttúrufræðistofnun er ríkisstofnun sem heyrir til umhverfis-, orku- og loftslagsráðuneytisins. Aðalstarfsstöð stofnunarinnar er á Akranesi en einnig er starfsstöð í Garðabæ, á Akureyri, á Breiðdalsvík og á Mývatni. Á stofnuninni starfa um 80 manns við rannsóknir og vöktun á náttúru landsins. Stofnunin varðveitir eintök um náttúru Íslands í vísindasöfnum og gagnasöfnum, sinnir ráðgjöf um verndun og nýtingu náttúrunnar og gegnir víðtæku fræðsluhlutverki. Meginhlutverk Náttúrufræðistofnunar Íslands er að stunda undirstöðurannsóknir í dýrafræði, grasafræði og jarðfræði landsins, annast skipulega heimildasöfnun um náttúru Íslands og varðveita niðurstöður og eintök í fræðilegum söfnum. Náttúrufræðistofnun Íslands býr yfir gagnabanka um náttúru landsins og hlutverk hennar er að hafa yfirsýn og veita ráðgjöf og leiðbeiningar um verndun og skynsamlega nýtingu náttúrunnar. Hún hefur einnig víðtækt vöktunar- og fræðsluhlutverk. English: The primary role of the IINH is to conduct basic research on the zoology, botany and geology of Iceland; to handle systematic documentation of nature in Iceland; and to preserve research findings and specimens in scientific collections. It is charged with maintaining an overview and providing advice and instruction on nature conservation and natural resource allocation. The primary role of the IINH is threefold: • to conduct basic research on the zoology, botany, and geology of Iceland, • to handle systematic documentation of nature in Iceland, and • to manage research findings and specimens in scientific collections. The IINH maintains databases on nature in Iceland and is charged with maintaining a broad overview of nature conservation and natural resource allocation, and providing advice and instruction thereon. It also has a broad monitoring and educational role.
